Springtime is Here-Time to Check Around the House

Springtime is here, which makes this an ideal time to do season home checks and maintenance so as things warm up, you’re free to enjoy the summer sun. Many of the following tips are an easy extension beyond a spring-cleaning routine and all will help to keep your home in good condition, improving its appearance and value, and saving time and trouble down the road.

Check the Air Conditioning – It may seem like the snow has only melted, but with so many things taking longer (thanks COVID) it’s a good time to get the ball rolling if you need to have the AC in your home serviced. At minimum, change the filter and look for any damage, and give it a test run.

Up and Down and All Around – Now is a good time to check your attic and basement to make sure everything is staying dry.

Start off in the attic and look for any signs of a leak in the roof by looking for water damage and mould. Be thorough to make sure that no mice or other creatures are calling your home their home.

Next, head downstairs to check any unfinished walls for cracks in the cement and look for signs of leaks behind finished walls by looking closely at drywall and trim mouldings. Check any basement windows are in good shape, are well sealed and show no signs of mould. While you’re down here, check the sump pump is in good shape and that washing machine hoses show no cracks, and fittings are tight.

Finally, head outside to walk around your home to check the foundation, exterior of your home, and the roof. If you’re nervous about getting up on a ladder, grab a set of binoculars and stand back from the home to get a better look at the roof. Check walkways and the driveway for any cracks or shifted brick or stone.

Check for Mould – It’s mentioned above, but it’s worth keeping in mind as you do your spring cleaning. Pay special attention to windows, and in the kitchen, laundry room, bathrooms and hot water tank. Address this immediately. If there’s a lot, give us a call and we can help make sure it’s removed safely and completely.

Seasonal Tasks – Spring and Fall are ideal times to check smoke alarms and carbon monoxide sensors and replace the batteries. Check fire extinguishers are in good condition and easy to access.

Now is a good time to clean your eaves-troughs and downspouts. Getting the clutter out of here will ensure that spring rains will drain out and get directed away from your home. You can use exterior caulking to seal up any small holes. Even if you’ve done this task in the fall, you may be amazed to find what debris winter storms can bring your way.

Check outdoor lighting in the spring as well. It’s true, daylight hours are getting longer, but while it’s not too cold, and not too hot, this is an easy and fast task to complete.

All the Greenery – Keep an eye on the plant life around your property and get set for the season ahead. Check any large trees for winter damage. Some stuff may be easy to spot, but if you’re uncertain, consider calling an arborist. Check over your lawn mower and trimmer. If it’s been a while, have the blade sharpened and motor serviced. Getting all of this done now means that when you set up your lawn furniture and BBQ, you’ll have a great looking yard to relax and enjoy.
