How to Prepare for Summer Storms and Flooding

Though summer is upon us, warm, sunny days are not always a guarantee. Our project managers at DKI-CRCS are in constant conversation about what the weather might bring any given day. With the recent weather events and the influx of floods, it is important to remind ourselves to be prepared for when a storm hits.

One of the easiest ways to be prepared for a storm is to stay up to date on weather events. Project manager, Brian Kelly is known as the office ‘weather man’ as he can often be found sitting at his desk with a weather map open.

Kelly said he stays informed on weather events because they affect the work he does.

“Weather affects what plans we have,” he said. “Weather affects building houses. It affects our timelines. It has an impact on almost everything we do outside of the office and sometimes inside the office. It has a great effect on whatever we as a team or we as a company can approach.”

Staying informed about the weather and preparing for floods can keep you and your home safe, especially when storm clouds roll in.

How to Prepare Yourself

  • Stock up on non-perishables.
    • Having non-perishables can prevent you from having to open your fridge during extended power outages.
  • Make an emergency kit.
    • This can include medical supplies, candles, batteries and propane for barbecuing in case of a power outage.
  • Elevate electronics and delicate items.
  • Listen to local weather warnings and stay informed.
  • Be prepared to evacuate your home.
    • If flooding occurs, it is important to move to higher ground to ensure the safety of you and your family.

How to Prepare Your Home

  • Clean your eavestroughs and downspouts.
    • This will ensure that rain can travel away from your home instead of finding a way in.
  • Have your roof inspected.
    • Ensure there are no exposed areas or missing shingles.
  • Grade your house effectively.
    • This is important so that on the ground level water can travel away from your home. Improper grading can lead to pooling water against your home and flooding.
  • Secure outdoor furniture and remove fallen or dead branches from around your home
    • This will prevent damage to your home if the wind picks up.

Contacting Your Insurance Company

If you have experienced flooding, it is important to take action quickly. Once you and your loved ones are safe, you should contact your insurance provider. Starting Repairs

After incurring water damage, you should start the restoration process as soon as possible. DKI-CRCS can begin emergency services in a timely manner using water extraction techniques such as installing drying equipment and mitigating water damage.

We’re Here to Help

Rain or shine, DKI-CRCS will be there. Whether it is a holiday, a long weekend or a rainstorm, we always have someone ready to respond to your call.

Kelly recalls getting a call on a long weekend for a sewer backup. He was not scheduled to be working.

“I got a call from a lady,” he said. “I said, ‘no problem, I’ll be there in eight minutes.’ She told me, ‘there’s no way you’re here in eight minutes.’ I said, ‘yeah, I just live around the corner.’ I was there in six minutes.”

He said when he got there, the lady looked at him and said, “This is the service that I love. This is why I call you.”

Over the past week, DKI-CRCS has responded to over 100 water claims. We continue to work to ensure that everyone in the community is tended to and supported.

“We want people to know that no matter what it is, what time of day it is, they can rely on DKI-CRCS to be at their door whenever they need us,” Kelly said.
